| HOW TO SELECT YOUR BOSTON TERRIER, PART 3 |

As you are making a commitment to the puppy for his lifetime, make sure he reacts positively toward you and members of your family. Select the puppy that seems outgoing and ready to trust you. Sit down with the Boston Terrier Puppies and see which one is interested in playing. If you are looking for strictly a companion pet, pick the puppy that wants to be with you and enjoys your company. Take the puppy you are interested in away from his littermates into another room or another part of the kennel. The smells will remain the same for the puppy, so he should still feel secure and maintain his personality, but it will give you an opportunity to inspect the puppy more closely without distractions. If the puppy ignores you or seems more interested in going back to his littermates, choose another one. When you purchase your Boston Terrier, remember that the purchase of any purebred dog entitles you to three very important documents: a copy of the dog's pedigree, a health record containing an inoculation schedule, and the dog's registration certificate. HEALTH RECORD The Boston Terrier breeder from whom you buy your puppy should have initiated the necessary inoculation series for the litter by the time they are eight weeks of age. These inoculations protect the Boston Terrier Puppies against hepatitis, leptospirosis, distemper, and canine parvovirus. In most cases, rabies inoculations are not given until a puppy is four months of age or older. These inoculations are given as a series, and it is very important that your Boston Terrier puppy receives the full set in order for them to be effective. The veterinarian you choose will then be able to continue on an appropriate inoculation schedule. PEDIGREE The breeder must supply you with a copy of your Boston Terrier's pedigree, a document that authenticates your puppy's ancestors back to at least the third generation. All purebred dogs have a pedigree. The pedigree does not imply that a dog is of show quality, but is simply a chronological list of ancestors. The pedigree can be helpful in determining if your Boston Terrier's relatives have any titles in obedience or field trials, which can indicate their trainability and the work ethic of the pup's parents and grandparents. REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE A country's governing kennel club issues this certificate. When you transfer the ownership of your Boston Terrier from the breeder's name to your own name, the transaction is entered on this certificate. Once this is mailed to the kennel club, it is permanently recorded in their files. You will need to produce this document if you decide to show your Boston Terrier. |
